Maternal Infant Program

Saturday, September 25th, 2010

Expectant mothers in Hospitalito’s Maternal Infant Program during a class in the education room. These women were selected for the program because their pregnancy is considered high risk and the need for prenatal care and education is great.

Please consider sponsoring a woman, by signing up at http://www.hospitalitoatitlan.org/sponsorship.html    It is a great way to be connected to Santiago Atitlán thru letters and photos.

Hospitalito LOVES coffee!

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Juan Francisco Pira is a member of the Capital Campaign steering committee and it is thru him that HA has received a large part of the donations for construction. Juan Francisco purchases and processes coffee in Santiago Atitlán and works with Cafcom, Granos del Sur and Starbucks. They believe in supporting the community where the small coffee grower lives and believe that rebuilding the hospital is necessary. This recent donation of $20,000 will go towards the inpatient area.

 workers-donate-a-day1.jpg

Everyone is excited about the new hospital. None more than the guys building it, and this Saturday they showed their enthusiasm by donating a day of labor. This isn’t the first time that the workers have chosen to volunteer on a Saturday to keep things on schedule. Now that the November 19th date for the dedication has been set, the push is on.

Thanks guys!

Nicole Seiver, inventory control specialist extroidanaire… is visiting her old job. Nicole volunteered with Hospitalito Atitlán for one year, and left nearly two years ago to begin work with OXFAM that has taken her all over the world. She is on vacation this week and will be heading for her next placement in Haiti… when travel permits.

Tropical Depression 11-E closed all roads in Guatemala on Saturday that were already in a bad state from earlier storms this year. Hundreds of roads are closed and dozens of bridges are down.  More than twenty people died when two buses were buried in a mudslide on the Inter-American highway. The government has called a state of emergency and people are told to stay at home.

It was great to see Ron and Dona Wilson again. They are old friends who have been coming to Santiago Atitlán for many years and have helped Hospitalito Atitlán with several pieces of medical equipment. Here they are with long time friends from Santiago Atitlán standing outside the labor and deliver rooms in the future maternity garden area. Dona hopes that her garden club will help with a donation for this garden where women in early stages of labor can walk with their husbands and mothers.
